“Web” alerts will become “Everything” alerts

Marcel Gordon, Product Manager of Google Alerts, sends an email as we’re walking out the door today letting us know that our trusty web alerts are changing.

You may receive more results after this change. If you find that you are getting too many results, you can change the “How often” setting to “once a day” or “once a week.” You can also change your search query. You can do this on the alerts management page (www.google.com/alerts/manage), or by removing the alert using the link at the bottom of each alert email and creating it again with different settings.

Interestingly enough, I’d bet that the reason they predict that this change will continue to serve the same results, or increase is because their results contain many more types of information, videos, forum/blog threads, news results, local business results, maps and, of course, web pages. The next step may indeed be to send videos and maps in the alerts themselves.

Tom Corbett Faces Off Against A Bunch of Rick Blaine Wannabes

Have you guys heard about the war going on between Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett and bloggers bfbarbie and CasaBlancaPA? Corbett has subpoenaed Twitter in order to gain “Any and all subscriber information…” on these two, in order to pursue criminal charges. Corbett’s vendetta seems directed more toward the blog they contribute to, which is also titled CasaBlancaPA. The blog sports this catchy mission statement: Exposing the hypocrisy of Tom Corbett.

But in doing so have they done something illegal? As far as we can tell, no. And judging as how anonymous speech is a big part of the first amendment it’s hard to see what legal ground Corbett has to stand on. Then again, it’s hard to see how he managed to get elected (and re-elected) in the first place. Did I mention he’s the leading gubernatorial candidate as well?

Coming after this blog just makes Corbett look guiltier and in doing so has only served to bring more publicity to their cause. Someone should tell Corbett how silencing criticism worked out for John Adams when he passed the Sedition Act way back in 1978.

We encourage the candidate to focus on the issues and talk about what his (potential) constituents can expect of his administration. And if Corbett succeeds in his bid to become the next governor then the folks at CasaBlancaPA, to quote their favorite movie, had better “Either lay off politics, or get out.”

Should blog post title tag match headline?

For purposes of SEO, should the title tag of my blog post be the same as the post headline?

Not necessarily, unless you want to rank for the exact phrases you use as your headlines.

I’d recommend to use the title tag do target 1-2 keyphrases containing in your headline, and use your headline to employ those keyphrases in a useful sentence, providing semantic usage of both the keyphrase and context for its usage.

No, my recommendation is just a better practice, not a necessity. For the sake of simplicity, you can definitely use the same info for both places with no harmful outcome.

Meta tags and Title Tags for SEO

where and how should I add meta tags in my html code to improve my SEO?

Meta tags belong between the tags near the top of your HTML code.

The tags you definitely want to have are:

Title tag – Not technically a meta tag but definitely to be included, Most important tag for SEO and deifnitely includes your primary keywords for the page.

Description Tag – Second most important tag, use sentences, make a pitch if you can, but definitely include your keywords here.

Keywords Tag – Separate your keywords with commas, or group into phrases, lot of flexibility here and a lot of conflicting advice exists.

Robot Meta Tags
Primary Robots Tag – Instructs robots, or search engine software, to include your content in their search index and follow the links on this page to others in your website

Slurp No Yahoo Directory description tag – Tells Yahoo search engine to use your meta description instead of a description they find in the yahoo directory.

Google bot tag – Similar to robots tag, provides directions to Googlebot. It is not necessary but can’t hurt.

Note, the examples above use the XML-style closing tag. Leave out the trailing / if your page is not xhtml.
