What exactly are backlinks and how can I create them on my own for my website?

A backlink, or link back, or inbound link is just a link to your website.

Since these links are, by definition, from other websites, you have to create relationships with other domains, other websites, to build your inbound links.

What’s an inbound link???

Inbound links (IBLs), are known by various names:

  • backlinks
  • text links
  • linkbacks


or just generally as links. Links themselves are an HTML construct that enables a web user to click an object, either text or graphics, and shift their viewing to a different URL. They look like this:

<a href="http://www.spidergourmet.com">SEO Company</a>

This will produce a text link:
SEO Company

That is an inbound link to the URL http://www.spidergourmet.com

To SpiderGourmet.com, that is a inbound link. To this blog, it is an outbound link, since it enables our readers to leave our website to visit the link target.

For SEO anchor text, what is the general feeling about extra punctuation included that is not part of a targeted keyword phrase?

I don’t think you need to eliminate all extra punctuation from every instance of that anchor text’s use. In fact, I recommend varying your anchor text. This improves that natural variance of your inbound link profile for the page you are linking to.
